RECOMMENDED READING

National Association of Women Lawyers Survey Report on the
Retention and Promotion of Women in Law Firms, 2008
 http://www.
nawl.org/Assets/Documents/2008+Survey.pdf
Marianne’s review:  A very well written and comprehensive report (co-
authored by Stephanie Scharf and Barbara Flom - with input from
Marianne Trost on the women’s initiative, business development and
women of color sections) based on data collected from the Am Law 200
in 2008.  Particular focus on trends regarding women promoted to
partnership and leadership positions, women lateral moves, women’s
initiatives, and women’s compensation.

Nice Girls Don’t Get The Corner Office 101 Unconscious Mistakes
Women Make that Sabotage Their Careers
by Lois P. Frankel, Ph.D.,
Business Plus Publishing, 2004
Marianne’s review:  An easy to read self-assessment guide with
practical coaching tips.  Focus is on how women can more effectively
navigate a male dominated working environment.  Many good tips for
women lawyers.

The (Un)Happy Lawyer: A Roadmap to Finding Meaningful Work
Outside of the Law
by Monica R. Parker, JD, Sphinx Publishing, 2008
Marianne's review:  A useful tool, for those who want to transition
outside of the law and are relatively new to the practice.  Includes case
studies of former attorneys who have made the transition to non-legal.
Helpful exercises to clarify goals and create an action plan to leave the
practice.

More book reviews to come.  I am currently reading
Women Don't Ask
and plan to read
Leadership and the Sexes after that.
